As you may know, Germans love order. This means that you have to take a number for your turn, go to the counter and then the official will register you.

For your registration, you will need the following documents:

  • Valid passport

  • Letter of admission

  • Proof of financing for your studies and living expenses (e.g. bank account statement)

  • Proof of health insurance coverage

Please note:

Make copies of your confirmation of registration since it is demanded by various institutes (e.g. banks, libraries, etc.) as proof of your address. Typically a residence permit is only valid for one year. (Changes in your address must be registered at the registration office)

Step II

The next step is to apply for a residence permit at the Office of Foreign Affairs, which is valid for one year. This has to be done within 3 months after your arrival in Germany. After approx. 4 weeks, you will get an appointment.

Please bring 100 Euros with you besides the following documents:

A very important step after your arrival in Nuremberg,

you have to register with the city of Nuremberg and obtain a

confirmation of registration as well as a residence permit.

Within two weeks of finding permanent accommodation,

(no youth hostel or hotel) it is necessary to do so,

because you will need this document to be able to apply for your residence permit.

For both applications you have to go to the Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt)

first and then to the Office for Foreign Affairs (Auswärtiges Amt) in Nuremberg, which are in the same building.
