Open up a Bank Account

 

Why open a German account?

It is recommended to open a German bank account for the following reasons:

 

• Most shops in Germany do not accept the VISA credit card (ex: grocery shops such as Norma, Aldi…)

• The charges on withdrawal of cash in Germany are often expensive

 

A German bank account is needed to subscribe for Internet and/or to have a German phone.

 

How to open a bank account? 

Opening a bank account in Germany may be troublesome,

as many banks do not accept to open an account for a limited period of time such as 1-2 year.

However, registering to the Sparkasse Nürnberg is made easy for us, students.

 

Go to any Sparkasse Bank in Nürnberg and ask for an English host and make an appointment.

For this appointment, prepare the following documents:

 

• Copy of passport/ID

• Student card

 

As you are a student, the opening/closing of the bank account is free of charge. Once opened, you will receive, within two days, your debit card.
