The housing in Nuremberg may reveal to be expensive. We suggest that you find yourself a flat mate and divide the rent.

However, if you are one of those youngsters who prefer to be alone, you may find an accessible apartment using the following tips.

Having searched through all of Nuremberg’s real estate agencies,

we strongly believe that there is only one agency that fits a foreign student’s needs. It is called Mitwohnzentrale Franken.

To get to their webpage please click on the button below.

(Their website is in English and their staff speaks it well.)

Instead of “wasting time” searching through the offers available on their website, we strongly advise you to contact them directly. Indicate in the e-mail what you are specifically looking for. Make sure to specify that you wish to be located near the school. Within a day or two, they will come back to you requesting that you fill out a form and send them a copy of your I.D. Once you are registered, the agency will send you accommodation offers you can choose from.

For car owners, when choosing an apartment, make sure that there are parking spaces available around. Parking spaces in Nuremberg are limited, and difficult to find. Indeed, the center of Nuremberg is mostly pedestrian.

The following steps will guide you a little bit through the normal procedure:

Step I

When you have found an apartment that suits you, they will ask you the following to establish the contract:

  • a copy of ID

  • your IBAN information

  • your student certificate (in some cases)

  • the deposit

  • the first rent

  • a part of the agency fee (to see with agency)

*The deposit, the rent have to be a bank transfer or in cash. They are no such things as “Cheques” in Germany.

Step II

Things to know before engaging in a contract:

  • The agency fee is quite expensive – make sure you can pay the amount before establishing the contract

  • Find out about the cleaning cost at the end of your rent. It may be exaggerated and needs to be negotiated with the agency

Step III

Once you have signed the contract:

  • If not included in the rent, make sure that the electricity and gaz registration is taken care of by the agency. The electricity/gaz fees will then be sent to you by post by the german gaz/electricity company

  • Ask the agency to give you the name of the previous tenant. This will be useful to set up your Internet connection

  • In Germany, it is not common for the agency to do an inventory. To avoid any misunderstanding at the end of the contract, we suggest that you do the inventory yourself. Take a newspaper with the date of your entry in the apartment. Take pictures of the apartment with the newspaper. Write down all the “minor” problems you take notice of – ALL of them. It is very important that you are picky and detail precisely the state of your new apartment. In an envelope, insert the printed pictures as well as your written document with the date. Return the envelope to the agency, ask them not to open it until the end of the rental contract.

  • Unlike in France, there is no need to insure your apartment
